What a Positive Test Cannot Tell You

A positive pregnancy test confirms that hCG has been detected in your system. It is an important first step, but it does not provide the full medical information needed to understand what is happening or consider next steps. A limited OB ultrasound can provide additional medical information that pregnancy testing alone cannot.

At Hope Pregnancy Resource Center, we offer no-cost limited OB ultrasounds to help you move forward with accurate, medically sound information.

Understanding Your Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to create images of internal body structures. During pregnancy, these images allow a medical professional to examine the uterus and gather specific information about how the pregnancy is progressing.

Depending on how far along you are, one of two types of ultrasound may be used.

In early pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound is often recommended for clearer imaging. This type of scan uses a small handheld device called a transducer, which is inserted into the vagina to capture images of the uterus and surrounding structures.

As the pregnancy progresses, an abdominal ultrasound is typically used instead. A water-based gel is applied to the surface of the abdomen, and the transducer is moved gently across the skin to capture images. The gel helps conduct sound waves and improves the clarity of the images produced.

Both types are standard medical procedures. Your advocate will explain which type is appropriate for your situation and what to expect before your appointment begins.

What a Limited OB Ultrasound Can Determine

A limited OB ultrasound can provide three critical pieces:

Gestational Age

Knowing how far along you are is essential when considering any pregnancy decision. Gestational age affects what options may be available and what next steps could look like. For instance, medical abortion is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation.

Pregnancy Location

A pregnancy that implants outside the uterus, often in a fallopian tube, is known as an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is a serious medical condition that requires prompt attention. An ultrasound can identify whether the pregnancy is located within the uterus.

Viability

An ultrasound can also indicate whether there is cardiac activity and whether development appears consistent with early pregnancy. Approximately one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage, and an ultrasound can help determine whether further medical evaluation is needed.
