Understanding Pregnancy Testing

When you think you might be pregnant, knowing what to do next is not always clear. A pregnancy test is one of the simplest ways to get reliable information and begin understanding your next steps.

At Hope Pregnancy Resource Center, we are here to make that first step as straightforward as possible.

What a Pregnancy Test Measures

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which your body begins producing shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. As the placenta develops, hCG levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy and can be detected through urine and blood tests.

A positive result means hCG has been detected in your system. It is an important first indicator, but it is not the complete picture you need to make informed decisions.

Knowing When To Test

Timing can affect the accuracy of a pregnancy test result. Testing too early can produce a false negative, a result that appears negative even when pregnancy has begun, simply because hCG levels have not yet risen to a detectable level.

For the most reliable result, the Mayo Clinic recommends testing at least one or two days after a missed period. If menstrual cycles are irregular or difficult to track, waiting about three weeks after sexual intercourse can also improve accuracy.

Testing first thing in the morning may improve accuracy because hCG levels are often easier to detect at that time of day.

What Your Results Mean

If your period does not start and tests continue to be negative, a healthcare provider can help look into other possible causes.

If your result is positive, a limited OB ultrasound can provide important medical information that a pregnancy test alone cannot, including estimated gestational age, whether the pregnancy is located within the uterus, and whether the pregnancy is viable by detecting cardiac activity. This information is important for protecting your health and for understanding your options clearly.
